I did a speed reading course and do read at times at significant speed.
I can safe you the money by simply explaining the following:
1) Speed reading is partial physical stuff. Like where to position your eyes such that you do not need to move it that much. Then train your eyes. If you missed a word begin by closing your eye. Just tell yourself you have seen the word and just are keeping your eyes closed till your mind allows you to see it again. I know it sounds strange, as most people have long time learned that missing a word means to erase the mind and refocus the eye back and read it again. Resist that. It will come. Soon you will be able to see with a quick glance most of a single row. In speed reading the eye goes only one direction and that is down the page somewhat focused on 1/3th and 2/3th of the line.
2) Just like sports, sex and other great things there is no need to read everything at breakneck speed. Speed is a byproduct of comprehension, speed is, or better should NOT be a goal.
3) The key thing to speed reading is focus and aligning your thinking to accept incoming data. Switch off TV. And get that plug out of your ear. The other ear too… Most slow readers never spend time to go at the index. Just grab a book and read the index. While you do that ask yourself: why did the writer make this a topic? How does it relate to the book? Would I structure it similar?
4) Spend time after each chapter. Did the material properly cover the topic? Did you learn anything? Was there something you disagreed with? If someone would ask you what two lines could summarize that chapter. (Notice how this sets you up to remember those lines in case someone asks you about the book!!)
5) Start with smaller books. Sit relaxed and grab a book you really would like to grasp. Read the index.
Most slow readers dive into a book by surprise… halfway page one they think about what is in the fridge and this lovely lady at the other side of the street. Dang did I feed the cats, O yes I did… Maybe I should see a nail consultant… On towards page two their mind is gone towards this nice holiday two years back … page 3 snoring sounds fill the room.
6) Remember: The key of reading is not muscular eyeballs but in understanding more about a topic and being able to share that with others.
