How do you categorize videos by content type?
Categorizing your YouTube videos by content type helps organize your channel, making it easier for viewers to navigate and find what interests them. Here’s how to categorize your videos effectively:
1. Use Playlists
Playlists are a great way to group videos based on specific themes, topics, or content types.
- How to Create Playlists:
- Go to YouTube Studio.
- In the left-hand menu, click on Playlists.
- Click New Playlist, give it a title (e.g., “Vlogs,” “Tutorials,” “Reviews”), and add a description.
- Add videos to your playlist by going to a video, clicking on the “Save” button, and selecting the playlist you want.
2. Use Video Titles and Descriptions
In the video title and description, clearly state what type of content viewers can expect.
- Examples of Content Types:
- Tutorial/How-to: “How to Edit Videos in Adobe Premiere Pro”
- Vlog: “A Day in My Life: Exploring the City”
- Review: “Honest Review of the Latest iPhone”
- Challenge: “Trying the 30-Day Fitness Challenge”
Including keywords related to content type in titles and descriptions also helps with search engine optimization (SEO).
3. Create Channel Sections
In the Custom Layout of your YouTube channel, you can create sections to showcase different types of videos.
- Go to YouTube Studio > Customization > Layout.
- Under Featured Sections, select Add a section, and choose how to organize the videos (by playlists, uploads, or specific categories).
Example: Create sections like “Popular Uploads,” “Product Reviews,” “Vlogs,” etc.
4. Use Video Tags
Tagging each video with relevant keywords helps YouTube understand the content type and makes it easier for viewers to find.
- For example, if you create a cooking video, use tags like “recipe,” “cooking tutorial,” “easy meals,” etc.
5. Use Channel Banner and Descriptions to Set Expectations
Let visitors know what content types they can expect by mentioning categories in your channel description and visually representing them in your channel banner.
For example: “Weekly Travel Vlogs, Tech Reviews, and DIY Projects!”
6. Use Content Series
If your videos follow a certain theme or are part of a series (e.g., weekly tutorials, a challenge, or a documentary series), use consistent naming conventions and organize them into playlists or groups.
7. Categorize in the YouTube Video Settings
When uploading a video, YouTube asks you to select a category. You can choose from:
- Film & Animation
- Music
- Gaming
- People & Blogs
- Comedy
- Education
- How-to & Style
- Entertainment
- News & Politics
- Sports
- Others
This helps YouTube suggest your video to the right audience.
Examples of Categories:
- Vlogs: Personal or daily life videos.
- Tutorials/How-to: Educational content explaining how to do something.
- Product Reviews: Assessments of products or services.
- Challenges: Fun, trending challenges.
- Unboxing: Opening and reviewing new products.
- Q&A: Answering questions from your audience.
- Behind-the-scenes: Content showing the process behind your videos.
By categorizing your videos in these ways, you’ll improve organization and engagement, making it easier for your audience to navigate your channel and find the content they love.
