What is affiliate marketing?

Affiliate marketing is a performance-based marketing strategy where an individual (the “affiliate”) earns a commission for promoting or recommending a product or service from another company (the “merchant”). The affiliate earns money based on actions taken by people they refer, such as making a purchase, signing up for a service, or completing other desired actions.

How Affiliate Marketing Works:

  1. Merchant/Advertiser: The company or individual who owns the product or service that will be promoted. They offer a commission to affiliates for bringing in customers or leads.
  2. Affiliate/Publisher: The person or entity that promotes the merchant’s product or service. Affiliates can promote products through blogs, websites, social media, email campaigns, or paid ads.
  3. Affiliate Link: The affiliate is given a unique tracking link to use in their promotional content. This link tracks the traffic or sales generated by the affiliate’s marketing efforts.
  4. Customer: The person who clicks on the affiliate’s link and either makes a purchase, signs up for a service, or completes another desired action.
  5. Commission: The affiliate earns a commission for every successful conversion (like a sale or sign-up) made through their unique link. The commission can be a flat fee or a percentage of the sale.

Types of Affiliate Marketing:

  1. Pay-Per-Sale (PPS): The affiliate earns a commission when a customer makes a purchase as a result of their referral.
    • Example: Promoting a product on a website, and earning a percentage of the sale price when a user buys it through your affiliate link.
  2. Pay-Per-Click (PPC): The affiliate earns a fee based on the number of clicks generated through their affiliate links, regardless of whether or not a purchase is made.
    • Example: Running ads that direct visitors to a product’s landing page using your affiliate link.
  3. Pay-Per-Lead (PPL): The affiliate earns a commission when a referred visitor completes a specific action, such as signing up for a free trial, subscribing to a newsletter, or filling out a contact form.
    • Example: Promoting a service where the user needs to sign up for a free trial using the affiliate link.

  • Low Risk: Affiliates don’t need to create their own products or services, and they don’t have to handle customer service or fulfillment.

Example of Affiliate Marketing in Action:

Let’s say you’re a blogger who writes about fitness products. You join an affiliate program for a company selling exercise equipment. You write a review or create a post about a specific treadmill and include an affiliate link. When a reader clicks your link and buys the treadmill, you earn a commission.
